face to face

If we do not know what we are going to be, we cannot know what we are; let us recognise ourselves in that old man or in this old woman. It must be done if we are to take upon ourselves the entirety of our human state.

Face-to-face took place in Leeds Kirkgate Market. Adult members of the public are made to look a few years older than their current age. This is not an act of turning the public into pantomime crones, but something more delicate. The process takes time, and so provides opportunity for thought and chat.
Once the make up is completed, its wearer can remove it or choose to wear it for the rest of the day. In this case they can ‘pass’ as an older person and gain some insight into the subtly different ways older people are treated.
